Lumbee legend, Kelvin Sampson. 🏀✨ University of Houston men's basketball coach Kelvin Sampson has been named SportingNews College Coach of the Year—his 13th National Coach of the Year (NCOTY) honor. A proud citizen of the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina, Sampson was born in Laurinburg, N.C., and raised in Pembroke, N.C. His father was among the 500 Lumbee who stood their ground in the Battle of Hayes Pond, driving the K* Klx Kln out of Maxton, North Carolina. 💥 This season has been historic for the HoustonCougars, with Sampson leading them to a record-breaking number of conference wins. The team has won 23 of their last 24 games, maintaining the nation’s longest active road winning streak at 14 straight.
