Iowa law enforcement associations and 911 operators are urging Gov. Kim Reynolds to veto language in a bill that would allow the state to charge local 911 boards for some costs. The 911 language was included in Senate File 659, a budget bill passed by state lawmakers in the early morning hours of May 14, minutes before the Iowa Legislature adjourned its 2025 session. At a news conference held at the Polk County Sheriff's Office on May 19, several law enforcement groups, local government associations and emergency responders said the bill could put funding for local 911 services at risk and urged Reynolds to veto the measure. Iowa governors have the power to veto specific line items within state budgets, meaning Reynolds could veto the 911 provision while signing the remainder of the bill into law.
