When I was at my smallest I got so many comments like “you look race fit”, but I was actually the least healthy I’ve ever been. My blood work was terrible, my workouts were inconsistent, I couldn’t sleep, I was antisocial, and I woke up every day dreading what I “had” to do.
There is this conception in the running world that a certain weight or level of leanness signifies being race ready; however, there are so many factors that go into fitness. While I can’t deny that body composition is a factor in running performance, I don’t believe that it has nearly the power that we give it. Any temporary performance gains that come from restriction are far outweighed by the long-term negative health consequences of underfueling.
