One of Michael Schumacher’s most iconic Ferrari cars sold at auction for a record price of $18,165,673.90 (€15,980,000) on Saturday, the auction house RM Sotherby’s announced.
The 2001 Ferrari F2001 Chassis 211 was the car in which Schumacher won the Monaco Grand Prix in 2001, as well as clinching the drivers’ and constructors’ world championships 12 weeks later at the Hungarian Grand Prix. In doing so, it carried Schumacher to back-to-back titles.
It is also the only Ferrari chassis in which the German won both the Monaco Grand Prix and the world title in the same season. RM Sotherby’s call it “among the most important of all Ferrari F1 cars.”
In selling for a new world record at over $18 million, the car becomes the most ever expensive Ferrari Formula One car as well as the second most valuable modern era Formula 1 car to sell at auction.
