The Philadelphia region is waking up to hazy skies thanks to some lingering smoke from the Canadian wildfires. And there is an air quality alert in effect, as Wednesday's heat and still air will lead to elevated levels of ozone, particularly in the late afternoon.
This Code Orange alert means the air could be unhealthy for sensitive groups like people with respiratory conditions, young children or elderly adults. Members of these groups will want to limit outdoor activities later in the day.
Code Orange alerts are common on summer-like days like these, when exhaust fumes get trapped in warm, unmoving air and the ozone level increases.
Though it's visible, impacts of the smoke on our air quality are minimal. The smoke is high up in the sky; not much is down on the surface where we breathe.
By the way, we're making a run at 90 degrees Wednesday and will likely reach that high temperature Thursday.
