With deep gratitude and admiration, we remember Lawrence B. “Barry” Wood Jr. ’61, a founding faculty member and cherished member of the CNU family, who passed away peacefully on May 24, 2025. Barry’s 42-year legacy at Christopher Newport began in 1961 when he joined as a charter faculty member. Over the decades, he shaped the university’s academic and cultural landscape—founding the Performing Arts Series, leading the Fine and Performing Arts Department, and serving as both Assistant Dean of Academic Affairs and Director of Development. Beyond campus, Barry was a committed civic leader whose generous spirit touched countless lives across the Peninsula. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, June 21 at 1:00 PM in the Pope Chapel at Christopher Newport University.
