Fun fact: in World War 1, Altyn-Arashan was used as a hiding place for the Kyrgyz people who were resisting the Russian invasion. Many fled to China to escape the conflict; many got caught in the bloodshed… but some decided to hike into the woods to Altyn-Arashan, where they knew they’d be hidden by the mountains and spruce trees. The local Kyrgyz people knew that no outsider could navigate the remote wilderness to find Altyn-Arashan tucked high in the mountains, and so they lived peacefully hidden in the woods this way. Now, although Altyn-Arashan is a bit more built up, I can say the journey to get here (whether by road, horse, or foot) is still pretty intense. 😆 It’s considered one of the most dangerous roads in the world!
