I’m a daughter of immigrants. Granddaughter of immigrants. Great-granddaughter of immigrants. I’m the first generation in my family to be born in the United States, go to school here, graduate college here, have English as my first language. My grandfather was a laborer, as was my uncle and my father - and all of my uncles and cousins who came here for a better life. I have a sister who is disabled. I have family who are trans. I have dear friends who are in the LGBTQIA+ community. I am a woman. I chose a career over starting a family. I kept my last name. I am divorced. I am a business owner. I am a professor. I have a passport that I never take for granted. I tell stories on public television. The immigrant story is my first story - I am standing on the shoulders of giants that came before me.
