Happy Father’s Day!
There are so many great dads out there, especially emperor penguins. These incredible fathers brave one of the harshest winters on Earth to raise their young, standing together through Antarctic blizzards with winds up to 145 km/hr and temperatures as low as -40°C.
The mother lays a single pear-shaped egg in early winter — the shape prevents it from rolling away. She then passes it to dad and heads off to sea for two months. He carefully tucks the egg onto his feet and keeps it warm inside a special pouch, all while going without food.
These super-dads survive on their fat stores, share body heat by huddling in groups, and even produce a nutrient-rich “crop milk” to feed the newborn chick if it hatches before mom returns. It’s a tough gig, but their dedication is what makes the next generation of emperor penguins possible.
To all the fathers out there (human or penguin) today we celebrate your strength, your patience, and your unwavering love.
