This estuarine habitat is ecologically diverse but threatened by the invasive European green crab. Over the last two decades, ongoing research initiatives have sought to understand the crabs’ impacts on the environment, restore the habitat, and perform controlled removal 🦀
In 2021, Fisheries Biologist Kiley Best of Marine Institute of memorialuniversity in partnership with fisheriesandoceanscan was tasked to investigate the interactions between wild river otters and green crab trabs (known as fukui pots), with the goal of ensuring the safety of otters during green crab removals and research. The Marine Institute had knowledge of green crab biology, and reached out to your Toronto Zoo's team for our expertise in otter behaviour 🦦
