It all started at a London hackathon where Tolúlope Ògúnremí made a startling discovery: Among the 1,000 coders in attendance, only about 10 were Black. “There weren’t many budding computer scientists who looked like me,” she recalls. Looking to help close that digital divide, Ògúnremí founded Coders of Colour, a nonprofit that hosts free coding workshops designed to highlight future career opportunities for young people. And to make sure everyone feels welcome, the group provides students with access to mentors from similar backgrounds. “Having representation from people who resemble them as much as possible is really important,” she says. Some codersof.colour participants have already gone on to study computer science in college or score jobs in the tech industry.
