This September, we took a trip to Castillo de San Marcos National Monument! One of our two key lessons for this excursion was “Echoes of the Past.” 🔊
This lesson is especially effective when visiting a culturally significant site, like a national monument!
⭐️We began with a historic overview of the location. For this excursion, we were given a wonderful introduction by a park ranger!
⭐️This segued into a group discussion about soundscapes, present and past. Students considered questions like:
💡What sounds do you hear right now? Are these sounds unique to the time period?
💡What sounds from the past are missing today?
💡What did natives of this land hear prior-to and during the Industrial Revolution?
⭐️To further our understanding, we discussed intrinsic and extrinsic sounds!
👂 Intrinsic sounds: cultural, historic, and natural sounds that belong within the park experience
👂 Extrinsic sounds: sounds that do not form an essential part of the park experience
