Pinball was once banned in New York City because the mayor at the time, Fiorello La Guardia, believed that because it was a game of chance (and not skill) it was a form of gambling.
It’s comical to me to think of something like a kid’s toy being thought of as a gateway to crime or the cause of societal ill wills.
The pinball ban was in place for over 30 years, until 1976, when Roger Sharpe, a young writer and pinball enthusiast, argued in a court proceeding that the game was indeed a game of skill and demonstrated that very skill in a pinball game that won over the court and lifted the ban.
