George W. Bush got roasted on SNL… and loved it.
At a small dinner with SNL creator Lorne Michaels, George W. Bush joked about the word “strategery” — a fake quote that became an iconic skit. He laughed about it. He didn’t deny it, spin it, or lash out. He owned the joke.
Jenna Bush Hager said it well: SNL’s job, and humor in general, helps to hold power accountable. And everyone, even the president, should be able to laugh at themselves.
In a time when politics feels more divided and serious than ever, that kind of humility is rare. What if more leaders could take a joke? Not just as a political move, but as real accountability?
A healthy democracy needs accountability, but it also needs leaders who don’t take themselves too seriously. Humor can break through division and remind us leaders are human, mistakes happen, and sometimes laughter is the best way to cut through anger and open dialogue.
