❌ STOP asking the children, “What do we need to find?”
Why?
Because they’ve become programmed to respond with, “SPACE!” without thinking.
It’s almost a routine answer now - like saying “yes” when you hear your name.
Instead, try asking them this: “What can you do to be ready to receive?”
It forces them to think.
This simple question encourages them to question themselves and can help them piece together a mental checklist of all of the things that they need to do in order to be ready to receive the ball!
- Have I found space?
- Am I on the half-turn?
- Are my arms up to feel for the defender?
- Am I on my toes, ready to move?
- Have I called for the ball?
So, in your next session, ditch the default “What do we need to find?” And instead, challenge them to think in a new way.
