She grew up in a home without electricity or running water. Her parents expected an arranged marriage, not a career. She didn't know how to turn on a computer or type.
Bhavna Chhabra (CompSci’95) arrived in the U.S. from New Delhi with sweaters borrowed from a cousin and dreams shaped by American TV.
She was one of the only women in her computer science classes and had to work twice as hard to catch up. But with determination, a mentor who believed in her, and a refusal to accept the life others planned for her — she found her path at CU Boulder.
“I had completely different and friendly interactions at CU,” Chhabra said. “The way I was welcomed to the university, it was like I found a home."
Today, she leads a 1,300-person operation as Google Boulder's site director.
