A gigantic cargo ship that caught fire off the coast of Alaska three weeks ago finally sank into the Pacific Ocean, taking down 3,048 vehicles and 1,880 metric tons of oil along with it.
The vehicles were mostly gas-powered cars (2,297), along with 70 EVs and 681 hybrids, according to the US Coast Guard. They're now 16,400 feet underwater. It's unclear which brands are affected.
Although it's too early to say what caused the fire, "smoke was initially seen emanating from a deck carrying electric vehicles," which was on its way to Mexico.
When the blaze broke out on June 3, the crew of 22 immediately implemented emergency firefighting procedures, but couldn't get it under control. They evacuated on a lifeboat and abandoned the 600-foot ship in the middle of the ocean.
