On this day in 1964…
Lyndon B. Johnson’s signing of the Civil Rights Act was a historic moment — meant not to create more division, but to help bring it to an end.
The law passed with overwhelming bipartisan support, earning votes from more than two-thirds of both the House and Senate, including majorities in both parties. It was supported by civic and religious leaders across the country, as well as by much of the American public.
But Johnson made it clear the law wasn’t a solution on its own. “We have come now to a time of testing,” he said. “We must not fail. Let us close the springs of racial poison… and make our nation whole.”
More than sixty years later, that test isn’t over. Honoring this legacy takes more than remembering the moment, it takes continuing the work. The Civil Rights Act wasn’t the end. It was a call to keep showing up — for freedom, dignity, and equality — for everyone.
