Okay, is there really a best suit color? Yes, yes there is, it's brown.
Brown, like navy and unlike charcoal, has a certain depth you can really get lost in. Like Brian suggests, it has a certain distinction not matched by navy. Brown suits are uncommon, making it even easier to get mesmerized.
Brian says they're as versatile as navy or charcoal, which, I suppose, depends on your definition of versatility. Brown is traditionally a somewhat more casual color, meant for the countryside. I wouldn't wear a brown suit to most weddings, or in a business formal context.
But this casual aspect gives them a new form of charm. They can look great in casual fabrics, without a tie, with a cap, even with sneakers. The opportunity to dress a suit down like that is fun.
Mine is a brown-on-brown herringbone wsl, Cosmos from dormeuil1842, made for me a few years ago by custommen. I wore it with a propercloth OCBD and my oakstreetbootmakers loafers.
