Max Duggan just led the TCU to a national championship appearance but the road to get there is a remarkable story.
During 2020 preseason COVID screenings, doctors diagnosed Duggan with Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome, an undiagnosed condition he has had since birth.
With Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome the heart has an extra electrical pathway between the upper and lower chambers. This causes a rapid heartbeat and in Duggan’s case required surgery. The nine-hour surgery placed catheters through Duggan’s neck and groin to restore a normal heart rate. The surgery was successful and Duggan returned to play, but during his junior season he suffered a broken bone and torn tendon in his foot.
Opting to play on his broken foot, Duggan refused to wear a protective boot, limited his practice time, and allowed trainers to give him painkillers before each game.
Duggan struggled at times but returned to starting form this season, boasting a 79.2 QBR and 3,546 passing yards.
