Whenever I go out and am wanting to shoot stars or the northern lights in this video here. I always start shooting “test shots” to make sure the lighting works, the photo is in focus, my iso isn’t too extreme to where I see lots of noise.
A few tips and tricks that have helped me.
• Make sure to always bring a tripod to make sure your photo stays perfectly still with no camera shake.
• A useful tip is to set a 2-5 second timer after you click the shutter button to make sure you pressing the button doesn’t shake the camera.
• My starting photo to gauge how my camera is going to work in the dark is open my aperture to the widest it can go. Then start my iso at around 3200-6400. My shutter speed will vary depending on what lens I have on and what style I’m going for. But a good baseline is 10-15 seconds.
Once I’ve nailed these photos and dialled in the settings so I’m not over exposed and not underexposed. I will start clicking away.
Have fun out there shooting our amazing nig...
