In what could be one of the last cases of its kind in Iowa, a North Liberty man has settled his lawsuit claiming he was rejected for a job because he is transgender.
Chase Lubbock sued the Central Iowa Juvenile Detention Center in June, accusing the facility of violating the Iowa Civil Rights Act when a hiring manager allegedly falsely told him a job he applied for was no longer open. The case was dismissed weeks later after the Detention Center's board approved a $60,000 settlement.
The timing of the case is notable because, as of July 1, the facility's alleged actions would no longer run afoul of the Iowa Civil Rights Act. Iowa passed a law this year, signed by Gov. Kim Reynolds in February, removing gender identity from the protected classes under the statute.
