Cabins at Camp Mystic had long sat in a flood zone. After renovations and years of discussion among officials about flood warnings, the riverfront cabins at the Texas youth camp established in 1926 remained, along with the dining hall and other gathering places. The New York Times identified six cabins that were located fully or partially in the floodway and many others that were outside the floodway but still in a designated flood zone, an area deemed to have a 1% chance of flooding each year. The cabins built in the known flood-risk areas ended up in the path of the deadly, surging floodwaters in the early-morning hours of July 4. #texas #texasfloods
