If we just read through the story of Ruth in the Bible, we might now know what God was really doing through Ruth and her act of love. But if we read Matthew 1, we see it - that Ruth is an ancestor of Jesus! God worked through Ruth to bring the Savior into the world! So what could the Lord do through selfless acts of love that we might show? Even if those acts of love seem to be insignificant to us - only God knows what he's going to make happen through those words and actions.
