A perfect storm of factors triggered their decline: the 1973–74 OPEC oil embargo sent gas prices soaring, stricter emissions regulations (Clean Air Act) slashed engine compression and horsepower, insurance premiums on high-performance cars became punitive, and consumer tastes shifted toward efficiency and practicality.
By 1974–75, key models like AMC’s Javelin, Dodge’s Challenger, and Pontiac’s GTO were discontinued, Chevelle and Charger were de-tuned or replaced by lesser variants, and even the Mustang was reduced to the economy-oriented Mustang II.
