Harvard introduced the “Flying Wedge” in 1892—a formation so intense, it only lasted one season.
The ball carrier wore a leather belt with side handles so teammates could grab on.
The rest of the team locked arms, formed a wedge, and charged full speed into the defense.
It was highly effective… but also deadly. Injuries and fatalities led to it being banned.
You can see a belt from that era—just like the ones they used—on display at the Hall. 🏈👀
