Firefighters in Türkiye and Cyprus are battling dozens of wildfires as a record-breaking Mediterranean heatwave fuels dangerous conditions across the region.
At least 10 firefighters were killed and 14 injured while battling a blaze in Türkiye’s central Eskişehir province, which later spread to nearby Afyonkarahisar. Fires also continued to rage in Bilecik for a fourth day, prompting evacuations in several villages.
Türkiye’s Agriculture and Forestry Minister İbrahim Yumaklı said strong winds and extreme heat were making firefighting operations perilous. Separate blazes were also reported in Sakarya, Karabük—where 10 villages were evacuated—and Manisa.
In Cyprus, two people died after being trapped in their vehicle by a wildfire near Limassol. Homes were destroyed, and multiple villages were evacuated as the blaze spread rapidly in mountainous terrain.
