Imagine that Dry January lasted 13 years and that you could go to jail if you broke it. THAT was prohibition.
There are, of course, benefits to drinking less alcohol even for a just a month, like better sleep, reduced liver fat, and lower blood sugar.
But in the early 1900s, alcohol was blamed for pretty much EVERYTHING that was wrong with America, kind of like how Nick and Vanessa Lachey were blamed for everything that was wrong with that one season of Love is Blind. So, yeah America said no alcohol for ANYONE.
And this mandate led to a thriving underground network of illegal alcohol distributors and speakeasy saloons. There were tens of thousands of speakeasies in New York alone.
As you can imagine, Prohibition became quickly unpopular, eventually getting repealed by the 21st Amendment in 1933. Turns out people like having the choice as to whether to drink or not… who knew?
