“We won!” – After 60 years, South Korea’s legal system apologizes to Choi Mal-ja.
At just 18, Choi was wrongfully convicted for defending herself against an attempted rape in 1964, after she bit off part of her attacker’s tongue. Instead of receiving justice, she was convicted and stigmatized.
In 2025, following years of legal battles and support from the
#MeToo movement, prosecutors issued a formal apology, acknowledging their failure to protect her as a victim.
The final ruling on her exoneration is set for September 10, 2025.
