Iowa Democrats decried historic Medicaid cuts under President Donald Trump's so-called "one big, beautiful bill" on Wednesday, July 30 — the 60th anniversary of the federal program that provides health care to low-income and disabled Americans.
Surrounded by signs pleading to "save rural hospitals" in a visit to Washington County Hospital and Clinics, Democrat Christina Bohannan, who is vying for the party's 2026 nomination in the 1st Congressional District, said Medicaid cuts affect health care access and affordability for everyone, not only Medicaid recipients.
She warned it could be "the final straw" that forces rural hospitals to close, reduce staff and beds or cut services.
