Life in Tennessee is good for former Californian Bob Steele. After a lifetime in his native state, he moved to Hixson in 2020, part of a wave of domestic migration that largely flowed to the Southeast. High taxes, particularly on his pension, pushed him to look elsewhere for his retirement plans. There were other factors, too. “California was just going to hell in a hand basket,” Steele said by phone. “Just fast. The politics there, and the governor there was just destroying the state. Homeless people had more rights than I had.” Steele is one of hundreds of thousands of Americans who have, in the words of one political committee, voted with their feet — and their money.
