Free posing round, Mr. Olympia 1991.
Here’s a clip of my own posing routine at my very first Olympia where I placed second.
So nowadays I don’t think the free posing round exists in the Open Class at the Olympia and I think it’s a shame because it was a round that was judged and could make or break placings.
It was a way that competitors could present their physiques in a way that reflected their personalities. They could essentially express their own version of bodybuilding through both music and their routine.
Traditionally the guys were fluid and graceful, however mine was the opposite in the way I presented my physique. My routine was martial and sort of ‘bam, bam, bam’ in the way I’d move through the poses. It was more aggressive and powerful, it reflected my personality and energy and the way I trained!
Guys used to be more artistic, creative, dramatic and entertaining with their free posing… it’s missing nowadays I think.
