E-bikes are a popular way to get around, but with collisions on the rise, we're cracking down on compliance and safety.
Nearly 90% of e-bikes involved in accidents are either overpowered, non-compliant, or used incorrectly.
There are two types of legal e-bikes.
š“ Electrically-powered assisted cycles (EPACs) have a motor with a maximum power output of 250 watts.
š“āāļø Power-assisted bicycles have one or more motors with a total power output no more than 200 watts.
If your e-bike is more powerful than these limits, it's considered a motorcycle. That means you need a license and registration, and you're subject to the same penalties for offenses like drink and drug driving.
Don't risk the fine:
āļø Check your e-bike meets the criteria so it's compliant.
āļø Always wear a helmet.
āļø Put away distractions like your phone.
āļø Use bicycle lanes and obey traffic lights.
