I call it the “Jazz Infinite 2-5 Glitch”, a looping technique that lets you move through endless chromatic minor II-V-I sequences until you choose to resolve. (Comment "guitar" for the Tabs link on Patreon)
This concept is built around guide tones, using them as the core connection between chords. Here's how it works:
- Start with the 3rd of the II chord.
- Move down to the 3rd of the V chord.
- From there, descend from the flat 9 of the V chord back to the 3rd of the next II chord, a half step down.
Repeat this process by moving everything down chromatically by half steps.
This lets you chain together minor II–V progressions smoothly, creating a continuous and flowing harmonic motion. It’s a great way to expand your soloing or harmonic vocabulary.
This concept works beautifully in tunes that already contain chromatic II–V movement, such as:
- “Blues for Alice” by Charlie Parker, especially at the end.
- “Four” by Miles Davis, in the second half of the B section.
