The Iowa Department of Government Efficiency task force has unveiled 45 recommendations to streamline state government, including a red tape hotline and merit pay for teachers.
Gov. Kim Reynolds established the Iowa DOGE task force through an executive order, following in the footsteps of President Donald Trump's federal DOGE. The task force is charged with finding more ways to cut state government, mirroring federal efforts to slash spending with a broad eye on Iowa's workforce needs.
Task force chair Emily Schmitt, also chief administrative officer and general counsel of Sukup Manufacturing, said at a Wednesday, Aug. 6, meeting that the group is moving toward the Sept. 29 deadline to finalize their report. The task force meets again on Sept. 24.
It would then rest on Reynolds to implement the recommendations through executive action or Iowa lawmakers through legislation.
