At least 33 people are confirmed dead and around 200 are missing after sudden, heavy rainfall triggered devastating floods and landslides in Indian Kashmir, officials said on Thursday.
The disaster struck Chasoti town in Kishtwar district. It comes just over a week after a massive flood and mudslide wiped out an entire village in the Himalayan state of Uttarakhand.
According to the Indian Meteorological Department, the incident was caused by a cloudburst — an extreme weather event defined as a sudden, intense downpour of more than 100 mm (4 inches) of rain within an hour.
