Stephane Dujarric, the spokesperson for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, has condemned the killing of five journalists in an Israeli airstrike on Gaza City on August 10.
‘This latest killings highlight the extreme risks that journalists continue to face when covering this ongoing conflict,’ Stephane Dujarric has said.
He called for 'an independent and impartial investigation' into the incident, adding that at least 242 journalists have been killed in Gaza since the war began.
Al Jazeera, in a statement, confirmed the deaths of journalists Anas Al-Sharif, Mohammed Qreiqeh, Ibrahim Zahir, Mohammed Noufal, and Moamen Aliwa in the attack.
The IDF has admitted to targeting journalist Anas Al-Sharif, accusing him of ‘leading a Hamas cell’ and alleging it possessed evidence of his ‘involvement in terrorist activities’, including ‘promoting rocket fire against Israeli civilians’. Accusations that Al-Sharif had previously denied.
