Why did we create a snail-free mucin? Snail mucins are a popular treatment in Korean skincare, and while we appreciate the hydrating benefits they can provide, through years of research we've been unable to find evidence that snail mucin is truly cruelty-free. Collecting a snail's natural secretion process can be slow and secretion amounts are often increased through 'stimulation' by being sprayed with salt or acid solutions, or having them crawl over a electrocuted mesh. A traditional bottle of snail mucin needs anywhere between 20-40 snails. We couldn't get on board with a process that’s painful and stressful to snails, inhumane, and not aligned with our values. So we got to work with our Korean labs and found that we could harvest a stretchy mucin from the natural mucilage of prickly pear cactus (not a synthetic, manufactured texture) which we used at an 81% concentration of the entire formula.
