Remember when time capsules were a thing? As part of the “Save the Culture” series, Howard University’s editorial team curated a list of songs to put into a “time capsule” to preserve Black culture for all time.
Music is a language, protest, a peacemaker, sermon, and satire. It has guided our ancestors to freedom, served as the soundtrack to our favorite films or plays, and influenced generations.
To complete this assignment, we enlisted the help of music buffs and industry experts — including ladylondon (B.S. ‘16), traceyleeesq (B.A. ’92), Jasmine “Jazz” Young thehiphopprofessor (B.A. ’94), and Eric Roberson erro44 (BFA ’97) — to critique our choices and help us understand what makes a song worth preserving.
