Tesla launched its “autonomous ride-hailing” service in the Bay Area on July 30, according to a post by Tesla AI on X.
Although the service is described on Tesla’s website as “Robotaxi,” the company cannot use the words “taxi” or “cab” in California, according to a CEO Elon Musk on X. Instead, Musk refers to the service as “autonomous ride-hailing.”
According to Terrie Prosper, director of strategic communications at the California Public Utilities Commission, or CPUC, Tesla only holds a charter party carrier permit from the CPUC, which allows the company to drive passengers in traditional vehicles. Tesla has not, however, applied for an autonomous vehicle, or AV, permit.
