Iowa’s largest drinking water utility is pushing back against a federal decision to remove segments of the two central Iowa rivers that are its prime water sources from a list of waterways considered impaired by pollution.
The Des Moines Water Works Board of Trustees said in a Thursday, Aug. 14, news release that it opposes the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s move to rescind the impaired-waters designations for the sections of the Raccoon and Des Moines rivers that include its main drinking water intakes.
The Raccoon and Des Moines river segments were among seven the EPA, then under President Joe Biden, added late last year to Iowa’s annual impaired waters list. The Iowa Department of Natural Resources quickly challenged the additions, arguing they violated state procedures and federal law.
With new leadership under the Trump administration, EPA Region 7 reversed course July 11, removing the segments in a move that critics say undercuts protections for drinking water.
