📢 BREAKING: U of M Ends DEI Programs
The University of Memphis has officially announced it will end all Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI) efforts in order to comply with Tennessee’s new “Dismantling DEI Departments Act” (Public Chapter 458).
➡️ Effective May 2025, U of M will:
• Restructure or eliminate offices and nonacademic programs focused on DEI
• Remove DEI references from its website & publications
• Adjust scholarships with DEI-based criteria
• End sponsorship/support of initiatives whose purpose is to “increase diversity, equity or inclusion”
📌 UofM President Bill Hardgrave emphasized that while the university does not discriminate, it must remain in compliance with state law.
This move means major changes for student support systems—including the Office of Multicultural Affairs—which will no longer operate in their current form.
