The research suggests a fascinating divergence in how children impact parental longevity. Fathers appear to benefit from having daughters, with each daughter extending their lifespan by an average of 74 weeks. Sons, however, don't show a similar effect on paternal longevity. For mothers, the picture is different: both sons and daughters seem to shorten their lifespan, each child reducing it by about 95 weeks. This implies that for mothers, the "cost" in terms of longevity is similar regardless of the child's sex. The study highlights complex and sex-specific reproductive costs and benefits related to lifespan.
