The first hurricane of the Atlantic hurricane season formed late last week, and became a Category 5 hurricane on Saturday a little north of Puerto Rico. Hurricane Erin has weakened to a Category 2 hurricane since then, and sits awfully close to the North Carolina coast early Thursday morning.
But it doesn’t look like it’s going to make landfall in the United States. Models are calling for it to recurve back out into the Atlantic, weakening and turning extratropical in a few days. It will create heavy surf and some possible beach erosion on the eastern seaboard, but it shouldn’t make landfall. Good news.
