After a breast cancer diagnosis two years ago — caught and removed in its early stages — Lori Hunt relies on health insurance to keep up with regular screenings and to pay for prescriptions.
Because of her financial situation, she qualifies for an expanded premium tax credit, which she said makes health coverage "extremely affordable." The expanded tax credit helps low- to moderate-income people afford health insurance purchased through the ACA Marketplace.
She recently joined several progressive groups in urging Iowa's Republican congressional delegation to extend the COVID-19 pandemic-era enhanced tax credits to keep premiums from rising and prevent millions from losing coverage nationwide.
Their advocacy against Iowa Republicans who are up for reelection next year, including U.S. Reps. Mariannette Miller-Meeks and Zach Nunn — who represent the 1st and 3rd congressional districts, respectively — signals an emerging campaign issue.
