It matches that map to the one stored securely in your iPhone’s Secure Enclave. So if your face matches, even with your eyes closed, it unlocks. Which means if you’re asleep, distracted, or even unconscious, someone could access your phone. The fix is simple: in Settings → Face ID & Passcode, turn on Require Attention for Face ID.
