Pauline Karpidas: The London Collection is coming to #SothebysLondon this September – and we’re counting down by spotlighting Surrealist landmarks around the world. In 1932, Julien Levy opened his gallery at 602 Madison Avenue in New York City. He was the first dealer to hold a major Surrealist exhibition in the United States, bringing to American audiences artists like Salvador Dalí, Max Ernst, and René Magritte – all of whom appear in Karpidas’ collection. His gallery became a meeting place for creatives, and – much like Karpidas’ Hydra Workshop – helped shaped the development of the movement at the time. Sotheby’s specialist julianmdawes visits the original address to share more on its history.
