Today, we acknowledge and remember Hurricane Katrina, the Category 5 storm that resulted in over a thousand deaths, billions in damages, and the displacement of over 1 million people. To those who lost friends, family members, homes, and more, we hold your grief with you. We also recognize the ways this storm brought to light vast and longstanding racial, economic, and environmental disparities in Louisiana and affected areas. While the reported number of deaths from the storm is around 1,800, we may never know the true numbers. Black, poor, residents of New Orleans were hit the hardest, people without the means to evacuate. Help from the government reached residents slowly, leaving massive amounts of people without water, food, and supplies for days. Law enforcement turned on stranded residents, choosing to protect “life and property” in affluent neighborhoods instead of the human dignity of suffering people.
