The centuries-old tradition of ox racing made its triumphant return to the southern Bavarian village of Haunshofen, drawing an enthusiastic crowd of more than 11,000 spectators and over 20 competing farmers with their animals.
The race, held only once every four years, transformed the village into a lively festival, with visitors dressed in traditional Bavarian costumes enjoying local food, music, and festivities.
In a nail-biting finale, ox Brutus, ridden by Jacobus Zach, narrowly edged out Hagar with Quirin Schwaighofer. Anna Steidl, riding Fonsi, secured third place.
The Haunshofen ox race, deeply rooted in Bavarian agricultural heritage, was once a serious test of strength and endurance for working oxen pulling heavy loads. Today, it has evolved into a vibrant community festival, celebrating rural traditions while engaging a new generation in the region’s cultural legacy.
