Mamadee Sangaray, a rising junior, excelled last fall as a defensive playmaker, shining as a hybrid linebacker/safety. In the “Moneybacker” role, he showcased his closing speed and pursuit against the run along with his smarts and ballhawking skills in coverage. His athleticism allowed him to succeed when playing in the box or even shifting to cover the slot.
He earned all-state honors after posting 93 tackles and five interceptions, three of which were returned for touchdowns, while helping the Gaels capture the CHSFL Class AAA state championship. That was in addition to his breakaway runs as a kick returner and the two clutch touchdowns he scored despite being used only sparingly as a wide receiver.
“I’ll have to be loud and verbal as a leader,” Sangaray said of his responsibilities. “We’ll have some guys (on defense) making their first varsity start, so I’ll have to be as helpful and encouraging as possible. It’ll be a great challenge for me.”
